Once harsh and inhospitable, the Tuscan Maremma is today a land devoted to hospitality, where it is difficult to find periods of the year that do not fully satisfy the traveler’s expectations. A territory varied by nature, with a thousand faces and many climates, with hot, sunny summers and mild winters, making it a suitable destination for a trip at any time of the year. If the Etruscan Coast, the Grosseto coast with Punta Ala and Follonica, the Silver Coast with the promontory of Monte Argentario, L’Giglio Island, Giannutri and Elba are renowned seaside resorts and headquarters of elegant and VIP tourism, in the hinterland they are the large centers of Etruscan and Roman civilizations, to attract the interest of visitors: from Sovana to Saturnia, from Cosa to Roselle, from Populonia to Vulci, is a succession of historic centres, villages, monuments, abbeys, medieval churches and museums. Among the tourist attractions, many are also worth a visit castles and towers which have abounded throughout the territory since the time of the Etruscans and which make the Maremma a truly fortified land, as well as the strongholds of the Aldobrandeschi, the medieval parish churches and the seats of the Lorraine, who governed Tuscany until its annexation to the Kingdom of Italy and Bonificato le Terre Maremmane, until then marshy, unhealthy and infested with the terrible malaria.
PROTECTED NATURAL AREAS, PARKS, RESERVES AND WWF OASES
A trip to the Tuscan Maremma absolutely cannot omit a visit to the numerous protected natural areas, both in the Livorno and Grosseto areas, come on Parks of the Val di Cornia to the most famous Maremma Regional Natural Park (also called Parco dell’Uccellina because of the mountains of the same name that are entirely part of it) to the tens of reserves and oases, some managed by the WWF (Bolgheri Oasis, Burano Lake Oasis, Orbetello Lagoon Oasis and Bosco Rocconi Nature Reserve), which dot much of the Maremma area. Don’t miss the stupendous Diaccia Botrona Provincial Nature Reserve, located between Castiglione della Pescaia and the provincial capital, Grosseto, one of the most notable wetlands in Europe, due to its particular and rare ecosystem, considered by many as a sort of the “gene bank” of the Maremma.
